Dr. Clifford Martin

Board of Directors, Chairman

Dr. Clifford Martin is an entrepreneur and engineer specializing in advanced optical systems design. He has extensive experience with high-precision optical systems, including astronomical optics, lithographic optical systems (including laser systems), interferometry, and laser surgical systems. At Perkin-Elmer, he was in charge of testing of the secondary mirror on the Hubble Space Telescope. Co-founder and Chief Laser Scientist at Taunton Technology Inc., he invented novel laser detectors currently considered the best UV laser detectors. Martin recruited, organized, and managed the engineering team at Taunton, the world leader in ophthalmic laser sculpting devices. His leadership formed the foundation that took this business to more than $1B annual revenue. At Silicon Valley Group Lithography, first as Director of Systems Engineering, then as Vice President of Engineering, Martin eventually managed a department of more than 100 engineers with a budget of $50M, developing profitable strategic partnerships with Intel and other important vendors. In 1996 he founded Odyssey Consortium, LLC, an optical consultancy that focuses on prototype development, systems engineering, and project management. His clients range from small optical instrument firms to large multinational firms such as ASML, ORA, and SVG. He holds a BA in Liberal Arts, Mathematics, and Philosophy from St. John’s College and a Ph.D. in Physics from Pennsylvania State University.
